Equally appreciated are upgraded versions of basics your loved one might already have, such as a fresh tea kettle or a new carry-on suitcase. We also love giving gifts that target a recipient’s interests, such as a pizza stone or pasta maker for an avid home cook or a high-tech watch for a golf fanatic.

Before you start shopping, take some time to think about the person you’re shopping for and your budget. When are you exchanging gifts and how much time do you have to shop? How much money are you hoping to spend? Many group exchanges such as Secret Santa create a set budget, which can help guide your shopping.

Next, hone in on the recipient’s interests. “What are special pastimes they enjoy, or favorite places and foods [they like] to eat?” asks Willa Callahan, Poppy Gifting’s other co-founder. “Is there anything special that fits into one of those categories that they might not be inclined to purchase themselves?”

After considering their interests, O’Brien recommends factoring in details that might narrow your shopping, such as where they live or their age.

“Say they love fresh Italian-style pizzas,” she says. “You might be piqued by an outdoor pizza oven for them to create their own pizzas, however if they live in a cold weather location you could consider pivoting to an indoor-specific oven or cookbooks and accessories suited for indoor pizza making.”

In short, only as much as you’re comfortable spending. “Our motto is that it’s the thoughtfulness that counts, not the price tag,” says O’Brien. No one should ever break the bank to treat a loved one, and you can find a tasteful Christmas gift on any budget, she adds.

“Is January too early?” Callahan jokes. “All kidding aside, the frenzy of the holiday season comes on fast. In today's market, inventory, production timing, and prices are constantly shifting, so purchasing ahead will ensure you beat any unavailability down the road.”

With that in mind, it never hurts to start thinking about Christmas gifts early in the season. Callahan recommends spending some time in the early fall considering your holiday gifting plans. Think about who you’ll be shopping for this year, how much you’d like to spend on each person, and some general categories that come to mind (say, something for the kitchen for your mom who loves to cook; a ski-related gift for your outdoorsy brother-in-law).
